Moodle 5.0 Now Available at ETH Zürich
We’re pleased to announce that Moodle 5.0 is now live at ETH Zürich. This upgrade brings several improvements that make teaching and learning smoother and more flexible. Below is a short overview of what’s new.
Activities overview
The new activities overview aggregates all activities of a course by type and shows information relevant for supervising students› work status. This way, teachers for example can see all workshops or assignments with the corresponding due date, number of submissions and how many of them require grading. Students have a similar overview where they see due dates and submissions status of their quizzes, lessons, assignments, readings, etc. (https://docs.moodle.org/500/en/Activities_overview).

Shareable questionbank
With the new shareable questionbank you can now use one question bank across all courses where you are enrolled as a teacher. This way you can easier reuse and share questions. When adding questions to a quiz, you will encounter the well known window where you chose the question category and then the question itself. At the top right corner you will also have a button «Switch bank». This button brings you to every question bank on the Course Moodle you have access to. Please note: You always have to choose a question bank and then a category. So make sure you organize your question banks and categories in a meaningful manner.
When adding a question to a quiz, after "Switch bank" you may choose from all your question banks in all your courses.
Changes to one question in the shared questions bank are reflected in all courses where questions of this bank are used. Also, new filters (for example for questions text or time created) and structure help organizing question banks better and more easily. For further details on the new question bank please see https://docs.moodle.org/500/en/Question_banks.
Assignment filters
Teachers may now filter their student’s submissions in an assignment for the submission status. This enables displaying only submissions not yet graded or not yet handed in. This feature simplifies the handling of submissions and makes it easy to get an overview of the students› work status. The messagge students receive upon submission contains the information which files they submit thus increasing transparency of the submission process.
Filter assignment submissions for status = "Submitted".
Other updates
You will notice some polishing of Moodle’s usability, accessibility, and design here and there. Improved upload of audio and media files in the text editor via drag and drop, new icons like those for import and export, and the possibility to add long descriptions (750 characters) to complex images are our favourite examples.
Do you use completion tracking? Or have a custom certificate in your Moodle course? Ensure the completion tracking setting is activated before or after you import course content because this setting is deactivated by default in newly created courses.
With Moodle 5.0 a new AI functionality «Explain» has been introduced. We are still seeking lecturers willing to pilot this or one of the existing AI functionalities such as summarising text and generating images in Moodle in their HS25 courses. Curious? Contact Karin Brown at the Unit for Teaching and Learning (UTL) for more information.
As announced with the latest update notes, the text editor atto as well as the activity «Chat» are no longer available for Moodle 5.0.
