Moodle 5.1 Now Available: What’s New for Teaching and Learning

We are excited to announce that Moodle 5.1 is now available on our learning platform, bringing several improvements that make course design clearer, navigation smoother, and learning more transparent for students. Building on the foundation of Moodle 5.0, this release further enhances usability and supports more efficient teaching workflows.

Improved Activity Chooser: Teaching Purpose First

One of the most visible updates is the redesigned Activity Chooser. Instead of grouping items simply by “Activities” or “Resources,” Moodle 5.1 organizes tools by pedagogical purpose—such as assessment, collaboration, communication, resources, and interactive content. Each category uses a distinct colour, making it easier to identify the right tool at a glance.

The chooser also provides more contextual information: teachers can see whether an activity is gradable, read short descriptions, and mark favourites for quicker access. A new “Add” button and double‑click functionality streamline the process of inserting activities, reducing unnecessary steps during course construction. Activity chooser – MoodleDocs

New Centralised Course Overview: A True Command Centre

Moodle 5.0 introduced a basic activity overview, but Moodle 5.1 expands this feature into a comprehensive centralised course overview page. This page now includes all major activity types—Assignments, Quizzes, Forums, Lessons, Wikis, and more.

For teachers, it serves as a dashboard for course management, showing what needs grading, which discussions require attention, and where follow‑ups are needed. For students, it provides a clear view of progress, displaying upcoming deadlines and completed tasks across the entire course in one place. For more details please refer to Activities overview – MoodleDocs

We encourage instructors to explore the new Activity Chooser categories and integrate the updated course overview into their weekly workflow. As always, our support team is available to assist with questions, difficulties or course adjustments: .

Do you use completion tracking? Or have a custom certificate in your Moodle course? Ensure the completion tracking setting is activated before or after you import course content because this setting is deactivated by default in newly created courses.
